On October 29 and 30, Bucaramanga will host the National Hotel Congress for the first time in the trade group's 71 year history, a gathering that brings together the country's hotel industry and comes backed by the Bucaramanga Chamber of Commerce, the Santander governor's office and the mayor's office. It is a specific piece of news, but it is also a good excuse to think about something broader: when someone says they are going to "see Santander," they could mean two very different experiences. One is the city, with its hotels and urban life. The other is less than an hour away, on the water.
What staying in the city gets you
A hotel in Bucaramanga makes sense for anyone arriving for work, for an event like this congress, or simply for a short weekend. It is comfortable, close to restaurants and the city's cultural life, and bookable in minutes from any platform. For business travel, short family visits or a couple of days away, it is usually the most practical option, and it is exactly the kind of experience the hotel industry wants to showcase to the rest of the country during this congress at the end of October.
What staying by the water gets you
The other side of Santander sits about 50 minutes from the city, on the Topocoro Reservoir, known locally as "the sea of Santander." There, the plan changes completely: kayaking, paddleboarding, jet skiing and wakeboarding on the same stretch of water, a natural waterfall near the road, horseback riding trails and ATV routes through native forest. It is not a hotel room experience or a tight schedule, it is a full day outdoors, and it is why more and more families from Bucaramanga build their weekend around the reservoir instead of staying in the city.
You do not have to choose just once
Most visitors pick one or the other every time they travel: a hotel room or a day by the water. But for anyone who already knows they prefer the second plan, there is a third option, owning a place by the reservoir instead of booking it again every time. That is the case with Altos de Yariguíes Country Club, a project of 138 residential lots on the shore of the Topocoro Reservoir, 50 minutes from Bucaramanga via the old road to Barrancabermeja. Every lot comes with its own independent title deed, financing is direct from the developer with no banks involved, and the social club, with a panoramic pool facing the reservoir, a social bar, ecological trails through native forest and a pet park, is already built, just 500 meters from the reservoir's water sports facilities. The model home is finished too, and you can walk through it in person, no renderings required.
While the country turns its attention to Bucaramanga for its hotel industry, it is worth remembering that a few minutes from the city there is another way to experience Santander: not passing through, in a room that empties out at the end of the weekend, but in a place that stays yours all year.
