Five Wellbeing Habits That Come Easier by the Water

When was the last time you spent a whole morning without looking at a screen? For many people who live in the city, the honest answer is "I can't remember." And it is rarely a lack of willpower. What is usually missing is an environment that makes the healthy habit easy instead of hard.

That is the idea behind this guide. It is not about heroic routines or medical promises, just five simple habits that come more naturally when there is a lake, a reservoir or a shoreline nearby. These are practical observations, not health advice: you know your own body better than any article does.

Five habits the water puts on your side

1. Waking early without suffering. It is much easier to get up early when what waits for you is light on the water instead of traffic. A lakeshore first thing in the morning has a calm that you enjoy all on its own.

2. Moving without calling it exercise. Kayaking, paddleboarding or simply walking the shore counts as activity, but it feels like an outing. Many people keep a habit better when it does not feel like a chore.

3. Really disconnecting. With a weak signal, a lot of scenery and something to do with your hands, the phone loses its grip almost effortlessly. Spending a while looking at the horizon is a habit too, and one of the cheapest.

4. Eating and talking without rushing. A table outdoors facing the water stretches out the conversation after the meal. It is a simple way to bring family or friends together with no plan other than being there.

5. Sleeping with the rhythm of the day. After a day outdoors, sunset works as a natural signal to wind down. It is not magic: you simply spend more hours outside and fewer under artificial light.

What this looks like in a real place

One concrete example is the Topocoro Reservoir in Santander, which many locals call "el mar de Santander." It sits 50 minutes from Bucaramanga along the old road to Barrancabermeja, so it works for a weekend escape without planning a long trip. Kayaking, paddleboarding, jet skiing and wakeboarding are all practiced on the reservoir, and its water sports facilities are only 500 meters from Altos de Yariguíes Country Club.

At the project, which is developed and sold directly by Proyecto Girasoles S.A.S., several of these habits already have a place to happen: ecological trails through native forest, a panoramic pool overlooking the reservoir, a social bar, a beach volleyball court, a soccer field and a dog park for owners' pets. I mention it as an example, not as the only option: what matters is that the surroundings make it easy to do what you already want to do.

How to start without buying anything

Before thinking about land, try the cheapest experiment there is: pick a weekend, go to a nearby lake or reservoir and apply just two of the five habits. Notice which ones feel natural and which feel forced. That answer tells you a lot about what kind of place suits you.

If afterwards you realize the water really does change your rhythm, it is worth asking yourself whether you want a space of your own near it. If so, it pays to see it in person, look at what is already built, and ask every question you need before deciding.
